Atlanta, GA – In a bold move aimed at securing a playoff berth for the first time since 2017, the Atlanta Falcons have named rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. as their starter, relegating veteran Kirk Cousins to the bench. The decision, announced by head coach Raheem Morris in a statement Tuesday night, signals a shift in the team’s approach as they enter the critical final stretch of the season.
Penix Jr., a standout rookie who impressed during the preseason, will now take the reins of an offense that has been inconsistent throughout the year. The 23-year-old was selected by the Falcons in the 2024 NFL Draft, and although many expected him to be groomed for the future, his performances in practice and recent games have accelerated his timeline.
“We’ve been impressed with Michael’s poise and growth over the course of the season,” Coach Morris said in his statement. “He has shown the potential to lead this team with confidence and energy. With our playoff hopes on the line, we believe now is the right time to make this change and give him the opportunity to take the next step.”
The decision to bench Cousins, who had started every game since joining the Falcons in 2023, comes as a surprise. Cousins, 36, has been a reliable veteran presence under center but has struggled with consistency in recent weeks. His performance has been a subject of scrutiny as the Falcons (7-6) sit on the cusp of playoff contention in a competitive NFC South division.
“I’ve always prided myself on being a team player,” Cousins said in a brief statement following the announcement. “I support the decision to go with Michael, and I’ll continue to do whatever I can to help the team succeed.”
The Falcons, who have not made the postseason since 2017, are currently in a tight race for a wild card spot in the NFC. With five games remaining, Atlanta needs to make a push to avoid falling further behind the division leaders and wildcard contenders.
Penix Jr.’s first test as the Falcons’ starting quarterback will come this Sunday, as they face off against the NFC East-leading Dallas Cowboys in a crucial home game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
