The New York Yankees have appointed Brad Ausmus as their new bench coach for the 2024 season, succeeding Carlos Mendoza, who became the New York Mets’ manager.
Ausmus, 54, brings a wealth of experience to the role, having played 18 seasons as a catcher in Major League Baseball (MLB) and managed the Detroit Tigers from 2014 to 2017, followed by the Los Angeles Angels in 2019.
In his playing career, Ausmus was known for his defensive prowess, finishing with a .994 fielding percentage and ranking among the all-time leaders in games caught.
His managerial tenure includes leading the Tigers to a division title in 2014.
Prior to joining the Yankees, Ausmus served as the bench coach for the Oakland Athletics in 2022.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed enthusiasm about Ausmus joining the coaching staff, citing his extensive experience and leadership qualities as valuable assets for the team’s pursuit of success in the upcoming season.
The Yankees’ 2024 coaching staff also includes Pitching Coach Matt Blake, Bullpen Coach Mike Harkey, and Hitting Coach James Rowson, among others.
The team is set to begin its spring training schedule in February 2025, with the first game against the Tampa Bay Rays on February 21.
Ausmus’s appointment is expected to bolster the Yankees’ coaching ranks as they aim for a successful 2024 season.
