Lawsuit Alleges Negligence in Devin Willock’s Death, Seeks $2 Million From University
The family of Devin Willock, the University of Georgia football player who tragically died in a car crash last year, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the University System of Georgia, seeking $2 million in damages. The lawsuit alleges that the university negligently entrusted a vehicle to recruiting analyst Chandler LeCroy, who was driving at the time of the fatal crash.
The lawsuit, filed on April 11, 2023, claims that the University of Georgia Athletic Association (UGAAA) and its employees negligently hired, supervised, trained, and retained LeCroy. It also alleges that the university failed to adequately investigate LeCroy’s driving record, which included four speeding tickets in six years.
The crash occurred on January 15, 2023, just hours after the Bulldogs celebrated their second consecutive national championship. LeCroy was driving a rented SUV with Willock and several other passengers when she lost control of the vehicle and struck several trees and power poles. LeCroy and Willock were both killed in the crash.
The lawsuit alleges that LeCroy was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. Her blood alcohol content was reportedly more than twice the legal limit. The lawsuit also claims that LeCroy was speeding and racing another vehicle at the time of the crash.
The university has denied any wrongdoing in the case. In a statement released on January 24, 2023, the university said that it was “deeply saddened” by the crash and that it was cooperating with the investigation.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who were killed or injured in this tragic accident,” the statement said. “We are committed to supporting them in any way we can.”
The lawsuit is expected to go to trial in the coming months. The family of Devin Willock is seeking $2 million in damages, including funeral and burial expenses, as well as compensation for the loss of his companionship and support.
