West Virginia University Lands Talented Transfer from HBCU
West Virginia Lands Top HBCU Transfer, Bolsters Secondary
West Virginia University has made a significant addition to their football program with the commitment of William Davis, a standout safety from Virginia Union University.
Davis, a 5-foot-10, 195-pound junior, joins a growing trend of talented athletes making the jump from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to the Power Five conferences. He brings a unique blend of athleticism, playmaking ability, and experience to the Mountaineers’ secondary.
During his time at Virginia Union, Davis established himself as one of the top defenders in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). In just two seasons as a starter, he amassed an impressive 115 tackles, including 25 tackles for loss. His impact extended beyond tackling, as he also recorded nine interceptions, four sacks, and two forced fumbles. This impressive performance earned him All-CIAA honors and solidified his reputation as a dominant force on the field.
Following a stellar 2024 season, Davis entered the transfer portal in late December and immediately attracted significant interest from numerous FBS programs. However, it quickly became apparent that West Virginia was the ideal fit for the talented safety. After a visit to the university on January 10th, Davis committed to the Mountaineers.
This move signifies West Virginia’s commitment to strengthening their secondary. Davis joins a talented group of incoming safeties in the Mountaineers’ 2025 recruiting class. While the team boasts impressive depth at the position, the current roster lacks experienced players. This creates a prime opportunity for Davis to contribute immediately and make a significant impact on the field.
Davis’s combination of size, speed, ball-hawking skills, and proven success at the collegiate level makes him a valuable asset to the West Virginia program. His addition is expected to bolster the Mountaineers’ defense and enhance their competitiveness in the upcoming season.
