Former Penn State quarterback promoted to Ohio State’s QBs coach: report

A former walk-on quarterback at Penn State, Billy Fessler has made quite a name for himself in the college coaching industry at a young age. His latest reported move was a big one.

Fessler, 29, will be promoted to Ohio State quarterbacks coach next season, according to a Wednesday report from 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz. He spent the 2024 season as a coaching assistant with the Buckeyes, working closely with the quarterbacks on the national championship run.

Fessler replaced former Buckeyes offensive coordinator Chip Kelly in the quarterbacks role, as Kelly moved on to be the offensive coordinator for the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders. Well-regarded Ohio State wide receivers coach Brian Hartline will lead Fessler as the new offensive coordinator in Columbus.

Before joining Ohio State, Fessler was slated to be the quarterbacks coach at UCLA under Kelly before the Bruins head coach made his move to Ohio State. Fessler also followed former Penn State offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead for a few years, coaching as a graduate assistant at Mississippi State in 2019 and as the quarterbacks coach and later the offensive coordinator at Akron in 2022 and 2023.

An Erie, Pennsylvania, native, Fessler was at Penn State from 2014-2017, playing in 17 games. He had just two pass attempts, with one completion for 8 yards, but also served as the primary holder in 2017.

Ohio State’s flurry of coaching staff changes have had plenty of Penn State-related impact, starting with James Franklin pulling defensive coordinator Jim Knowles away from Columbus. Then, after NFL departures from Kelly and offensive line coach Justin Frye, Fessler and former PSU tight ends coach Tyler Bowen earned spots of Ryan Day’s staff. Bowen was reported as the next Buckeyes offensive line coach earlier Wednesday.
