Ex-Raiders QB Derek Carr Already at Risk of Getting Cut by Saints

For nearly a decade, Derek Carr was under center for the Raiders organization. The quarterback kept the team out of the gutter of the NFL and was an ambassador during their transition from the historic city of Oakland to the bustling lights of Las Vegas. But for all the time he spent in the Silver and Black, the team had little to no sustained success and not a single playoff win to show for it. After nine years with the franchise, he was cut by the team in 2022 and joined the New Orleans Saints. However, NFL.com writer Matt Okada thinks the quarterback will face a similar fate in the Big Easy. “Derek Carr, who has ranked 14th on average in passer rating over the past five seasons, is probably a middle-of-the-pack starting quarterback,” wrote Okada. “But his $51.5 million cap hit in 2025 is the fourth-highest at the position. … It’s hard to know which path they’ll take, but either Carr or his money will likely

The tricky thing about a quarterback like Carr is that he will never be bad enough that your team can draft a highly-touted college quarterback early in the first round, but he is also yet to prove that he can consistently bring a team to the postseason and win. He is never really the issue, but he is also never the solution. Carr has the misfortune of being on a Saints team with the worst cap situation in the entire NFL, so cuts have to be made by the organization. With an aging roster, an underwhelming haul of draft picks, and no money to spend in free agency, New Orleans is in desperate need of a teardown and rebuild.

Several NFL teams could use the talents of Carr, especially if he is on an incredibly cheap deal like Russell Wilson was last year. Multiple teams need a quarterback, and the Saints need a lot more help than that, so cutting Carr would make a lot of sense.
