In a significant move for collegiate volleyball, setter Charlie Fuerbringer has officially joined the University of Wisconsin Badgers for the 2024 season. Hailing from Hermosa Beach, California, and standing at 5-foot-11, Fuerbringer brings a rich legacy and exceptional talent to the Badgers’ lineup.
A Legacy of Volleyball Excellence
Volleyball runs deep in Fuerbringer’s family. Her mother, Joy McKienzie-Fuerbringer, was an All-American setter at Long Beach State, leading the 49ers to an NCAA championship in 1993. Her father, Matt Fuerbringer, was a four-time All-American at Stanford and a member of the 1997 national championship team. He currently serves as an assistant coach for the U.S. Men’s National Team. Growing up in such an environment, Charlie was immersed in the sport from an early age, fostering a deep understanding and passion for the game.
High School and Club Achievements
At Mira Costa High School, under coaches Cam Green and Nancy Mason, Fuerbringer distinguished herself as a premier setter. She was recognized as the No. 1 setter in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com and ranked No. 2 overall by Prep Dig. Her leadership was instrumental in guiding her team to a state championship, and her performance earned her the title of 2022 Los Angeles Times Player of the Year. Beyond indoor volleyball, she showcased her versatility by contributing to her high school’s beach volleyball team’s success, securing the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Team Championship in 2022.
Fuerbringer’s club career with Mizuno Long Beach Volleyball Club, coached by her parents, further honed her skills. She led her teams to gold medals in the 12 and 13 age divisions at the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships, underscoring her competitive edge and commitment to excellence.
International Experience
On the international stage, Fuerbringer represented the United States with distinction. As a member of the U.S. Girls U19 National Team, she played a pivotal role in securing a gold medal at the 2023 FIVB U19 World Championship in Croatia. This experience against top-tier global competition has undoubtedly prepared her for the challenges of collegiate volleyball.
Transition to Wisconsin
Fuerbringer’s decision to join the Wisconsin Badgers was influenced by the program’s esteemed reputation and the welcoming atmosphere she experienced during her visit. “The second I stepped onto campus, Madison felt like home,” she remarked, highlighting the kindness and inclusivity of the community. Her commitment was officially announced on November 8, 2023, as part of a six-member recruiting class poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming season.
Immediate Impact and Freshman Season
Stepping into a crucial role, Fuerbringer made an immediate impact in her freshman season. She debuted at Louisville on August 27, 2024, recording 42 assists, nine digs, and two blocks. Throughout the season, she started in 32 of 33 matches, averaging 10.95 assists per set, ranking third in the Big Ten and 13th nationally. Her performance earned her multiple accolades, including:
- AVCA All-American Third Team: Recognizing her as one of the nation’s top players.
