Devenport notches three hits, but Baseball falls at #12 Tennessee Tuesday

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — In a rematch of the opening game of the 2024 Knoxville Regional, the Northern Kentucky baseball team took on the #12 ranked Tennessee Volunteers on Tuesday in a midweek matchup at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The Norse put up a valiant fight, but fell to the Volunteers on the road.

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN – PITCHING

  • Bobby Bartlett got the start for the Norse, throwing an inning plus and allowing three runs on three hits and three walks, striking out three batters.
  • Griffin Howell was dominant against the defending national champions, throwing three scoreless innings.
  • Gerald Hanson recorded a pair of outs, both coming on strikes.
  • Ryan Pehrson finished off the seventh without allowing a run.
  • Carson French threw a perfect eighth with a strikeout.

  • BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN – BATTING
    • Logen Devenport notched the lone multi-hit game for the Norse, finishing 3-4 with two doubles, a walk and an RBI. Devenport stole two bases as well.
    • Gabe Miranda finished 1-5 with a two-run single.
    • Tyler Shaneyfelt finished 0-3, but drew two walks and had an RBI.
    • Josh Williams finished 1-5.
    • Jake Altman ended the night 1-3 with a walk and a run scored.
    • Jake Paulick finished 0-1 with an RBI.

    HOW IT HAPPENED

    • Trailing 2-0, the Norse plated four runs in the second, as both Tyler Shaneyfelt and Logen Devenport drew walks with the bases loaded before Gabe Miranda lined a single up the middle to give NKU a 4-2 lead.
    • Tennessee played a run in the home half to make the score 4-3.
    • The Volunteers took the lead in the fifth and added on in the sixth, but the Norse cut the deficit to one on an RBI groundout from Jake Paulick.
    • Tennessee added an insurance run in the seventh, but the Norse couldn’t get any closer in the loss.
