Stoke City free agent snapped up by Stockport County

Stoke City made the call to release Christy Grogan due to the young centre-half talent they have knocking on Mark Robins’ door

Christy Grogan has landed a one-year deal with Stockport County following his release from Stoke City.

The Republic of Ireland youth international had spent nine years with Stoke coming through the ranks and has impressed on a trial at Edgeley Park, playing in B team games over the last month.

The centre-half has always been highly regarded by his coaches at Stoke and he had trained with the first team but Stoke are well blessed for young players in his position, including Jaden Dixon, Jake Griffin and Freddie Anderson, plus Pijus Otegbayo and Owen Powell.

Stockport’s head of emerging talent Vinil Joseph, who has also signed up Marcus Kouam and Rhys Watson to their first pro deals, said: “Christy has impressed both on and off the pitch since joining us on trial. He possesses excellent physical attributes for a defender and has shown leadership qualities since his first day with us.

“Signing a professional contract is a significant milestone. We are confident that these young men will approach the next chapter with the same commitment and dedication that got them here. We will continue to support and guide them, and we look forward to seeing their development in the months and years ahead.”

Stockport have just finished third in League One but lost in the play-off semi-finals to Leyton Orient, who were then beaten at Wembley by Nathan Jones’s Charlton Athletic.
