Morgan Gibbs-White transfer news: Nottingham Forest midfielder snubs Tottenham to sign new club-record contract
Morgan Gibbs-White is set to stay at Nottingham Forest until 2028; midfielder agrees club-record deal in “statement of intent”; Forest accused Tottenham of making an illegal approach with a £60m bid earlier this month; Gibbs-White scored seven goals and produced 11 assists last season
Morgan Gibbs-White has signed a new three-year contract with Nottingham Forest.
Forest say it is a club-record deal and a “statement of intent from our owner Evangelos Marinakis”.
It comes after Forest accused Tottenham of making an illegal approach for the midfielder with a £60m bid earlier this month.
Forest owner Marinakis said: “Morgan is a special player – not just in terms of talent, but character and mentality. He represents everything we want this football club to be: he is a winner, talented, ambitious, fearless, and proud.
“There was significant interest from various clubs, but we were determined to build our future with Morgan at the heart of it. I promised our fans we would not only compete, but grow stronger and stronger every season. Today is another big step in that journey.”
Forest’s bosses shut down lines of communication with Spurs, accusing them of an illegal approach for Gibbs-White and a breach of the confidentiality clause in his contract, which prevented any public release of the value of his buy-out clause.
Forest made it clear in letters to both Tottenham and Gibbs-White’s agent that they reserved the right to pursue legal action in the future.
‘I believe in what we’re building’
Speaking after signing his new contract, Gibbs-White said: “I’ve felt at home at Forest from the moment I arrived. The support from the fans, my teammates, and everyone around the club has been unbelievable.
“I believe in what we’re building here – and with the backing of Mr Marinakis and the enormous ambition he has, I want to be part of making something special. I’m excited for what’s to come.
“We’ve had difficult times, but we’ve had a lot of highs, and last year was really, really exciting.
“We got to showcase what we’re about and what we’re trying to build as a team, and I feel like Mr Marinakis is the base of that. So, I was delighted to sign.
“Mr Marinakis is the main reason for that [ambition in the dressing room]. We’ve built that culture inside the dressing room, and I feel like that’s what’s driven us all the way through.
“The manager’s been incredible since he’s come in. The fans, as well, the fans have been absolutely amazing.
“From the very first moment I’ve joined, and to give them back European football, it’s something that we’re, as a dressing room, as a team, as a club, we are all really proud about, because they’re the ones that deserve it the most, because they’re the ones that pay the hard-earned money and show up on the weekends and come and watch us play, and support us and cheer us.”
The England international scored seven goals and registered 11 assists as Forest qualified for Europe last season.
Gibbs-White arrived in Portugal this week for Forest’s pre-season training camp after being given special leave by the club to deal with a private matter.
The 25-year-old played the second half of their 3-1 defeat to Fulham on Saturday evening.
