Tennessee Football Alumni Shine: 7 VFLS
Advance to NFL Divisional Round
Seven Tennessee VFLs enter the divisional round of the NFL Playoffs still alive with a chance at a Super Bowl LIX berth.
Trey Smith’s Kansas City Chiefs square off against Derek Barnett’s Houston Texans in Saturday’s first game at 4:30 p.m. ET on ESPN and ABC. Barnett recorded one tackle last week as his defensive line made a difference in the Texans’ 32-12 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Smith begins the quest for his third straight Super Bowl title. The Chiefs hold the AFC No. 1 seed.
A trio of VFLs – quarterback Hendon Hooker, linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin and defensive back Emmanuel Moseley — are in Saturday’s nightcap when the No. 1 seed Detroit Lions host the Washington Commanders at 8 p.m. on FOX.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Rams take on the Philadelphia Eagles at 3 p.m. Sunday on NBC with two Vols looking to continue their stellar defensive play. Edge rusher Byron wreak havoc in the wild card victory over the Minnesota Vikings, recording four tackles and 1.5 sacks. Young now has nine sacks in his second season. Safety Jaylen McCollough logged six tackles in last week’s win and is up to 49 on the year.
Wins by the Lions and Rams would guarantee a VFL in the Super Bowl. Former Tennessee player and assistant coach Tee Martin coaches the Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson, who leads his squad against the Buffalo Bills in Sunday’s nightcap. Kickoff from Buffalo is 6:30 p.m. on CBS.
