Cornet Set for Genoa Switch, Watford and Blackburn Miss Out

West Ham United winger Maxwel Cornet is closing in on a loan move to Serie A side Genoa, according to renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Ivorian has endured a frustrating season, making only two appearances for Southampton during his loan spell with the south-coast club. This follows a limited role at West Ham, where he struggled to establish himself in the first team.

Earlier reports from 225 Foot indicated that both Blackburn Rovers and Watford were keen on securing Cornet’s services this January. Both Championship clubs were actively seeking to bolster their squads in the hopes of securing a play-off place.

However, it appears that Genoa have won the race for the 28-year-old’s signature. A verbal agreement between West Ham and the Italian club is believed to be in place, with Cornet set to reunite with former Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira.

This move will undoubtedly come as a blow to Blackburn and Watford, who were hoping to add a player of Cornet’s experience and quality to their squads. Both clubs now face a race against time to identify and secure alternative transfer targets before the January transfer window closes on February 3rd.

Cornet’s move to Genoa represents a fresh start for the winger, who will be hoping to reignite his career under the guidance of the experienced Vieira.
