Willy Gnonto of Leeds United believes Manchester City is still the best team in the Champions League.

Gnonto, 19, sparked a transfer saga last summer when he refused to play for Leeds and lodged a transfer request.

He was keen to join Everton, but with Leeds unwilling to sell, he was obliged to apologise in order to re-enter the first team.

Now that he has been reintegrated into Daniel Farke’s team, the Italian star has played four league games for the Whites, scoring once.

He’ll be watching the Champions League from his couch and hopes to see Italian teams excel, albeit he believes Manchester City are the best in the competition.

“They [the Italian sides] are all strong, I am sure they will have a good run,” Gnonto told Italian radio Sport Mediaset when asked about the Champions League.

“Let’s hope they make it as far as they can and that some of them win.”

“Who is the tournament’s strongest? Manchester City, as they demonstrated last year.

“However, there are many teams that can perform well; we’ll see who makes it to the end.”

Gnonto will hope to participate in the Champions League at some time in his career, but it remains to be seen if he will make it to the largest stage of all.
