Collingwood coach Craig McRae confesses he made an unbelievable mistake when he told his players about the birth of his daughter on grand final day
Craig McRae has lifted the lid on the major error he made when revealing his baby news to his Collingwood stars ahead of their grand final victory.
McRae, 50, was unable to contain his joy on Saturday after welcoming his first child with wife Gabrielle on the morning of the grand final.
Just hours after Maggie’s birth, McRae oversaw a famous victory for the Pies which ended their 13-year wait for a premiership.
‘Today was already the best day of my life, because my wife gave birth to a little girl this morning at 7:45,’ he said on stage at the MCG.
‘So darling, I’m coming home tonight with the cup – I love you!’
Speaking to Channel 7 after Saturday’s win, McRae added: ‘My wife’s incredible. She went into labour yesterday afternoon, didn’t tell me, she just said she wasn’t feeling very well.
‘I got a phone call this morning about quarter to six saying ‘you better get to hospital, this baby’s coming.’
‘Amazing day, it’s already the best day of my life – it just seems to have gotten a bit better.’
