£15m defender is more likely to sign for Spurs than Marc Guehi

The injury to Micky Van de Ven and the suspension for Cristian Romero has certainly highlighted just how much depth Spurs are lacking at centre-back, but, luckily, the summer window represents a great chance for Tottenham to get reinforcements through the door.

One player who has been linked to Spurs as of late is Marc Guehi, but according to Tom Barclay, speaking on The Tottenham Way Podcast, that is a transfer move that may not be all that likely.

Indeed, Barclay says that Guehi may prove to be a bit too expensive for Tottenham, while a player like Lloyd Kelly, who Spurs did move for in the summer on deadline day, could be a more realistic target.

‘My understanding is that at the moment if there’s a player to come in it’s likely to be a centre-back, there have been suggestions about Marc Guehi recently. He ticks a lot of boxes but would be an expensive option. I see Romero and Van de Ven being the long-term pairing for the Ange Postecoglou era, so I can’t see that one personally,” Barclay said.

“I’d be surprised on that one personally, but someone like Lloyd Kelly at Bournemouth who can also play at left-back makes a bit more sense.”

Of course, you can never have too many good footballers at your club, but there has to be a balance struck in terms of how many minutes each player can play.

With Romero and Van de Ven guaranteed starters at the moment, Guehi’s role in this Spurs side would be unclear. Meanwhile Kelly would probably come in expecting to be an rotation option and be happy with that role.

Guehi is a better player than Kelly, but signing the Bournemouth defender in January may make more sense for Tottenham in terms of squad composition.
