Bayern Munich left devastated by Florian Wirtz rejection despite offering better salary than Liverpool as Vincent Kompany failed to convince Bayer Leverkusen star after Arne Slot talks
The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder was all the rage in this summer transfer window with Bayern and Liverpool getting closest to securing the German’s signature. As per Sport Bild, it was Slot and Liverpool’s sporting project which tempted Wirtz to shut the door on a Bayern move despite the German club offering a bigger deal.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Liverpool have been after Wirtz for a long time with Slot presenting a clear and profound tactical plan to the German in March. This presentation involved how Slot plans to use Wirtz’s abilities for the team and player’s overall development. This is where Bayern lost out. On one hand, Slot had a clear-cut plan and project whereas Vincent Kompany put more effort into trying to tempt Wirtz’s father and advisor, Hans Wirtz. Later when Kompany and Wirtz met, the latter had already made up his mind on joining Slot’s squad.
In the last few weeks, Wirtz’s potential move to Liverpool has gained momentum. Reports circulated that the German had given Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards the green light to proceed with negotiations, and that he even wanted Alexis Mac Allister’s “number 10” jersey. However, Wirtz denied these claims, stating he has immense respect for his fellow players and would not make such a request.
Liverpool are finally demonstrating the strategic approach of a top club, effectively identifying their shortcomings and securing replacements for departing players. With the Jeremie Frimpong deal completed and Milos Kerkez’s move from Bournemouth nearing finalisation, the potential signing of Wirtz would be the icing on the cake for the Premier League champions. With Germany now out of the Nations League, Wirtz’s transfer to Anfield appears to be on the horizon.
