Owens, the longest-tenured commitment in the 2024 signing class, was a cornerstone and vocal recruiter for the Longhorns after coming into the fold in January of 2023. Ranked as consensus three-star prospect at the time, Owens was one of just five offers by quarterback coach AJ MIlwee and the only in-state quarterback offer for Texas in the cycle.
“Me and my family kind of talked. Do we really have reason to wait?” Owens told Orangebloods. “UT has given me everything I’ve needed, anything I could really want. There was really no reason to wait.”
The vocal leader of the group, Owens was a part of the pivotal June 23 visit weekend that netted 10 of Texas’s 22 commitments — including two Texas five-star commitments.
Once committed to Texas, Owens elevated his play and led Cy-Fair to an 11-2 season behind his 3,303 yards and 43 touchdowns — including a shocking overtime upset over Katy in the 6A Playoffs. Named district MVP in both years as a starter for the Bobcats, Owens passed for 6,360 yards and 77 touchdowns as the full-time starter.
