The Philadelphia Phillies have been one of the best teams in the league for the last few years, but they haven’t made the big upgrades to put themselves over the top.

This offseason, the Phillies have already signed Kyle Schwarber to a new deal, but they haven’t done anything notable outside of that big move. JT Realmuto and Ranger Suárez sit in free agency, as of Saturday, and the Phillies haven’t made a move to re-sign either.

“Roster construction at this stage should prioritize stability over experimentation. Championship teams rarely gamble at catcher. They invest in trust, familiarity, and leadership,” Davis wrote. “The most important roster move the Phillies must make after Christmas is re-signing Realmuto. His presence anchors the pitching staff, controls the running game, and stabilizes a roster built to contend. Without him, Philadelphia introduces unnecessary volatility into a season that demands precision.”

Re-signing Realmuto shouldn’t be very difficult for the Phillies. He’s projected to sign for $34 million over two seasons, per Jim Bowden of The Athletic, which is a price the Phillies can certainly afford.

Bringing back a valuable veteran catcher would be a huge step in the right direction for the Phillies. It’s difficult to find a productive backstop, so it’s crucial the Phillies re-sign Realmuto while they have a chance to do so.
