Zakai Zeigler breaks Tennessee steals record during Georgia game

Zakai Zeigler officially cemented his place in the Tennessee basketball record books on Wednesday night.

In the 2nd half against the Georgia Bulldogs, Zeigler became the program’s all-time leader by recording his 213th steal. The star point guard intercepted Dakota Leffew’s inbound pass to break the record. Zeigler’s steal led to an easy layup from Jordan Gainey.

The previous record was just set last season by Santiago Vescovi. Vescovi secured his 212th steal last season, breaking Vincent Yarbrough’s previous record of 211.

Zeigler has had an incredible career in Knoxville. Through 117 career games with the Vols, the star guard has averaged 10.6 points, 1.8 steals, 5.1 assists, and 2.6 rebounds. Zeigler earned SEC Defensive Player of the Year and First-team All-SEC honors in 2024 and has been chosen for the SEC All-Defensive team 3 times.

In addition to the steals record, Zeigler is also 2nd in career assists with the Vols, trailing only Johnny Darden who played from 1975-79 and dished out 715 assists.

Zeigler’s Vols entered Wednesday night’s game as the No. 6 team in the nation with a 15-1 overall record and a 2-1 mark in SEC play. The senior has averaged a career-high 11.9 points per game this season to go with 1.8 steals, 7.6 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per game. Thanks to Zeigler’s efforts, the Vols boasted the No. 2 total defense in the country heading into Wednesday.

If the Vols defeat the Bulldogs, they’ll improve to 3-1 in the SEC heading into a weekend matchup against Vanderbilt.
