Smith is one of the best guards in the transfer portal.

NCAA Basketball: Pac-12 Conference Tournament Quarterfinal-Colorado vs Utah

We have a new name to watch for in the transfer portal, and it’s a big one.

The Kentucky Wildcats and Mark Pope’s staff have been confirmed to have reached out to Deivon Smith.

The Utah Utes point guard has also been recruited by Villanova, Florida, St. John’s, Miami, Louisville, and Creighton, among others.

Smith, who just recently entered the portal, started his collegiate career at Mississippi State in 2020-21, then transferred to Georgia Tech for two seasons and ended up at Utah last season. Now, he’s on the move again as a fifth-year guy for next season.

Last season was the best year the 6-foot guard from Loganville (GA) posted in his career. He averaged 13.3 PPG and 7.1 assists per game on a Utes team that went 22-15 and finished ninth in the PAC-12 last season. He brought down 6.3 rebounds per game, as well.

Smith led the conference in assists per game but also shot almost 41% from behind the arc, a staggering increase from the season prior in Atlanta, when he shot just 26% from 3-point range.

Smith is one of the better point guards to hit the portal, along with Javon Small, another guy Mark Pope is in on.

In Smith’s final game at Utah, against Indiana State in the NIT semifinal, he dropped a cool 28 points, seven rebounds, and six assists on the Sycamores.

If you want to solidify your backcourt, look no further than Deivon Smith to give you a jumpstart.
