Freedman, the former manager of Bolton Wanderers, has been backed for the Newcastle United position.

Freedman has been connected with the role as the Magpies look for a replacement for Dan Ashworth, who was placed on gardening leave in February amid speculation about a possible move to Manchester United.

The 49-year-old is presently Crystal Palace’s sporting director, a position he has held since the summer of 2017, and has received praise for his involvement in the signings of Eberechi Eze, Michael Olise, and Adam Wharton, among others.

Keith Wyness, former Everton CEO, believes Freedman would be a suitable fit for the position given his experience at Selhurst Park.

He told the Insider Track Podcast, “We’re a long way from fans chanting the name of a sporting director.” Fans are satisfied as long as they believe the person is skilled and has a large network.

“That is what Dougie Freedman would offer; he already has a solid reputation in the game.

“He’s worked on some great issues, both with lesser and greater budgets. He would be a good fit for the position, so best wishes to him.

“A football director’s work is typically hidden from the fans until transfers are made. “The only true credit comes when trophies are won and dividends are paid out.”

After Owen Coyle left Wanderers in 2012, Freedman took over as manager and spent a couple of years in charge. The Scot also spent time in the dugout at Nottingham Forest before returning to Selhurst Park.
