Phil Hay reported on Tuesday (22 August) that the new owners at Elland Road have begun to grow frustrated with the timing of the demands being made.

The 19-year-old originally asked to be left out of the Leeds squad for a Carabao Cup match against Shrewsbury Town before refusing to play against Birmingham City and ultimately handing a formal transfer request to the club hours before they faced West Brom.

Explaining the ownership stance on the transfer, Hay wrote: “There is frustration within United’s hierarchy with the way Gnonto and his camp have handled the past couple of weeks, not least over things like the timing of his formal transfer request on the night of a match.

“Farke’s history as a coach made it highly likely that he would respond by ostracising Gnonto from his squad. In the past, the German has shown near zero tolerance for anyone trying to force their way out of a club.

There has been some discussion since Gnonto’s request to leave Elland Road over whether he would be able to be reintegrated back into Farke’s squad this summer, but it feels as though the Italian has well and truly burnt his bridges in Yorkshire.

The new owners at Leeds have been hands-on so far in their running of the football club and for Gnonto to have already frustrated them with his action so far this summer, they’re unlikely to extend an olive branch to the winger.

For some fans, the worst thing you can do is refuse to play for a club that you’re contracted to in the hope of pushing through a potential transfer and the timing of Gnonto’s transfer request has rightly upset both the board and the fans alike.

Whether or not the Whites manage to find a potential suitor before the transfer window closes, the 49ers have shown that they won’t be taken for idiots during negotiations as they have continued to wait for their valuation to be reached, rather than allowing Gnonto to leave for a cut price offer because of his actions.
