Former Buffalo Bills running back retiring from NFL at age 27

Damien Harris has called it a career.

On Monday night, the former Buffalo Bills running back released a statement on social media announcing that he was retiring from the league.

In part of his retirement announcement, Harris wrote:

For the past 20 years, playing the game of football has been one of the greatest privileges in my life.

Getting to represent the name on the back of my jersey on and off the field, getting to compete at the highest level with and against the best competitors while winning championships, and being coached by the 2 greatest head coaches of all time in Nick Saban and Bill Belichick are all just a small part of what God has done in my life with the game of football.

The people I’ve met, the places I’ve been and will go on to go, the experiences and memories I’ve made, the impact I’ve been able to make to this point, these are the things that mean the most to me.

Gratitude is defined as “The quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.” Today I am grateful I have found the strength to walk away from the game I love so much.
Harris would go on to thank his former teammates, coaches, agent and wife before writing a message to his son, Dame II.
The full statement can be viewed below.

Harris joined the Bills as a free agent in 2023. He appeared in six games with Buffalo rushing for 94 yards and one touchdown while adding 16 yards on two receptions. Harris, originally signed to be the team’s No. 2 back, had limited opportunities in his lone season with the Bills. James Cook was given the bulk of the team’s carries, but Harris also had competition for the No. 2 back with Latavius Murray in the backfield.

Before Harris had a chance to establish himself, his season came to an end due to a neck injury suffered against the New York Giants in Week 6. Harris spent the night in the hospital after suffering the injury and was placed on the injured reserve shortly thereafter. Harris seemed to avoid a significant injury, but he never returned to the field with the Bills.
Before joining the Bills, Harris spent the first four seasons of his career with the New England Patriots. He rushed for 2,094 yards and 20 touchdowns in New England and added another 281 yards on 40 receptions with the Patriots.
