Virginia Tech 2024 football opponent crushed the transfer portal according NCFB writer

The Virginia Tech football team faces a doable schedule in 2024. For the second straight season, the Hokies will begin the season with their four non-conference games, two at home and two away from Blacksburg. At the end of September, Brent Pry and his team will begin ACC play with a pair of road games, at Miami and Stanford.

It’s no secret that the Hurricanes are going to be a difficult road game in South Florida, but things got a lot tougher over the offseason. Head coach Mario Cristobal has not met expectations during his time at Miami, but the veteran coach did a lot of work over the winter and spring to put his team in a position to take the next step in the ACC.

Miami “crushed the transfer portal” this offseason

Cristobal did some major work in the transfer portal and added a bunch of key pieces that are going to step right in and make a huge difference for the Hurricanes and that work did not get lost on Brad Crawford of 247Sports.

“One of the nation’s most active teams in the spring portal window, the Hurricanes added quite a few elite pieces to the 2024 puzzle in recent weeks, including the top-rated running back available in former Oregon State star Damien Martinez. Houston wideout Sam Brown should help the offense withstand the loss of Colbie Young to Georgia and of course, the mega gem, was convincing Washington State’s Cam Ward to avoid the 2024 NFL Draft as Miami’s next QB1. A couple defensive signees are going to start, too. No excuses here. Mario Cristobal has his best roster since his arrival.”

Quarterback Cam Ward and running back Damien Martinez (Oregon State) are going to be a difficult duo to stop for all 12 teams on Miami’s schedule this season and it’s going to be a difficult ACC opener on the road for Virginia Tech on Sept. 27. Hokies’ quarterback Kyron Drones has been working out this offseason with Ward, who passed on the NFL Draft after leaving Washington State to play for Cristobal in 2024, and knows first-hand just how good he is.

Crawford is correct in one thing, there are no excuses for Cristobal and Miami in 2024, but this is going to be a major test for Virginia Tech. Syracuse, who the Hokies will visit in early November, finished No. 22 in the rankings under first-year coach Fran Brown who added former Ohio State QB Kyle McCord.
