Shaquil Barrett, a two-time Super Bowl winner with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Denver Broncos, announced his retirement on Saturday.
“I’m ready to give my full attention to my wife and children and help them achieve their goals,” Barrett stated in an Instagram post. “I’ve been thinking about this for awhile and the decision has never been more clear then it is right now.”
Barrett signed a one-year contract with the Miami Dolphins in March after being released by the Buccaneers in an effort to cut costs.
Barrett, 31, spent five seasons in Tampa, including the 2020 season, which culminated in a Super Bowl victory under quarterback Tom Brady.
Barrett and his family experienced a tragedy in April 2023 when his 2-year-old daughter, Arrayah, drowned in the family pool. He returned for the start of the 2023 season, recording 4.5 sacks and 52 total tackles, including 33 solos.
Barrett, an undrafted free agent out of Colorado State in 2015, has 59 career sacks in nine seasons with the Buccaneers and Broncos, including his first Super Bowl win in 2015.
In 2019, his first season in Tampa Bay, he led the NFL with a team record 19.5 sacks. Barrett had only one additional season of double-digit sacks, in 2021, with 10.
