NRL: Penrith Panthers sack star Taylan May over domestic violence charges

Taylan May has decided not to sue Penrith for attempting to cancel his NRL contract, instead accepting a compensation to leave the club with immediate effect.

May became a free agent on Friday, when he was dismissed from his contract after two show-cause notices.

According to AAP, May has already attracted attention from local and international clubs, including rugby union.

The split comes as the 22-year-old continues to face domestic-violence charges arising from an alleged altercation involving his wife on April 8.

May has pleaded not guilty to assault resulting in actual bodily injury and two charges of stalking.

He has been subject to the NRL’s no-fault stand-down policy since being charged in May, and he will be unable to play until at least March 2025, when the case is due back in court.

The centre may still sign with an NRL side while suspended and return to play, depending on the outcome of the legal processes.

May re-signed with the Panthers in March, but the three-time champions attempted to terminate his contract during his stand-down.

In May, the club gave the Samoa international a show-cause notice for reasons unrelated to the domestic-violence charges.

That notification is thought to have referenced an October 2021 incident in Queensland, in which May was convicted of assaulting a man during Penrith’s grand final celebrations.

There was no conviction for that occurrence.

May also sparked controversy when a video surfaced on social media earlier this year that purported to show him in the passenger seat of a fast automobile.

Following a meeting between May and Penrith early last month, the club served the centre with a second show-cause notice for domestic violence accusations.

May then filed a lawsuit in Federal Court, demanding damages and compensation and alleging that the Panthers violated employment laws.

On Friday, Penrith confirmed that the player had accepted an undisclosed payment to depart the club where he made his NRL debut in 2021.

The AAP has verified that the civil dispute between May and the Panthers has been resolved.

“Taylan May is leaving the Penrith Panthers effective immediately to pursue other opportunities,” according to a club statement released on Friday.

May played his final 30 games for the Panthers against Canterbury in Round 10, and new acquisition Paul Alamoti has since established himself as his first-choice centre replacement.

The team signed Asu Kepaoa from the Wests Tigers in the middle of the season to provide cover, and rising guns Jesse and Casey McLean are ready to play outside back.
