Northbeach cornhole tournament to benefit Attack Addiction
To honor her brother’s memory and thank the organization that assisted her family for years, Northbeach bartender Morgan Matarese has developed an inaugural cornhole tournament fundraiser to be held Saturday, Aug. 31.
“On Nov. 28, 2023, I lost my little brother David to addiction,” Matarese said. “Attack Addiction helped my family tremendously in his four-year struggle.”
Since his passing, Matarese said she has done everything she can to give back to the organization.
“It’s very personal to me,” she said.
The nonprofit Attack Addiction was created by the family of Tyler Armstrong Keister after his accidental overdose. The group works to educate and bring awareness of addiction as a disease, and support people in recovery as well as those who have a loved one in recovery or who have lost a loved one to addiction.
Attack Addiction was able to provide housing for David when securing resources for him was so difficult, although it’s such a common problem, Matarese said.
The tournament will kick off at noon, Saturday, Aug. 31, at Northbeach and will be limited to 32 teams. Registration is $100 per team. The first-place winner will receive $500 in gift cards, second place earns $250 in gift cards, third place wins $100 in gift cards, and all participants receive team shirts and refreshments.
DJs and live entertainment will keep things festive throughout the day, and tournament participants can return to Northbeach from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 1, for an end-of-summer barbecue.
Matarese said participants can sign up by messaging co-worker Peter Briccotto on Instagram @thepeterb_ or stopping by Northbeach, 125 McKinley Ave.
