Canadiens center Jake Evans, according to Sportsnet’s Luke Fox, is a player that the Maple Leafs might target before the March trade deadline. The Leafs, sitting atop the Atlantic Division with a 12-6-2 record entering play Sunday, have struggled to find consistency on their third line and are boasting a plethora of injuries on offense. On a “Quick Shifts” column at Sportsnet, Fox mentioned that Evans, who is on an expiring contract, could be a cost-effective solution to boost Toronto’s forward depth.
“Perhaps most important is what GM Brad Treliving learns about his group before the trade deadline: Centre depth is a serious issue,” Fox wrote. “Treliving, surely, has begun looking at potential rental options such as (…) Montreal’s Jake Evans.” Evans, 28, has developed into a solid player for the Canadiens since he entered the organization as a seventh-round pick in the 2014 NHL draft and made his debut in 2020.

A native from Toronto, Evans has struggled a bit this season with just four goals and 10 points in 20 games. Evans carries a modest $1.7 million cap hit part of his three-year, $5.1 million contract, making him an attractive rental option for a team in need of depth such as the Maple Leafs are these days. The Maple Leafs’ third line has been an area of concern, as Fox pointed out, with Toronto having to use many players there including rookie Fraser Minten.

Among Fox’s rental suggestions, on top of Evans, were also Brock Nelson of the Islanders, Mikael Granlund of the Sharks, Frank Vatrano of the Ducks, and Nick Bjugstad of the Hockey Club.
