Coventry City chief impressed by Hull City in MKM Stadium stalemate

The Tigers returned from the international break to earn a point at home

Coventry City manager Mark Robins lauded the impact of Hull City’s substitutions in Friday night’s 1-1 draw at the MKM Stadium, as the Tigers maintained their good start to the season.

City dominated the second half after trailing to a Joel Latibeaudiere header just shy of the half-hour mark, and their pressure eventually paid off when Aaron Connolly’s clever header three minutes from time salvaged a point for Liam Rosenior’s side.

In an attempt to break down a tenacious Sky Blues defense, Rosenior changed formation and introduced attacking full-back Cyrus Christie, winger Jason Lokilo, and Liverpool loanee Tyler Morton for his debut, and it was his pinpoint cross that found Connolly’s head to head in the game-saving goal.

“I thought it was a really good game between two really good teams,” Robins remarked. “Throughout the game, both teams posed questions to each other, and we took a well-deserved lead.” We had some really brilliant performances, but it was disappointing to move ahead and then have chances to score again.

“On the whole, it was probably a fair result.” Every time you go and get something, you think to yourself, ‘It’s a good point,’ but it’s laced with regret due to the timing of their goal. Their substitutes were better than ours and had a greater impact.

“From our perspective, the timing and nature of the goal were really poor, and it was disappointing.” But because of the weight (ownership) of the ball, which keeps the fans interested, we ended up dropping deeper and making stupid decisions. It was a pretty excellent, hard-fought game, but on balance, I think the result was fair.”
