Hue Jackson fired at Grambling State after 2 seasons

GRAMBLING, La. — Grambling State University football coach Hue Jackson has been fired effective immediately, the school’s athletic department announced Tuesday.

Jackson, the former Cleveland Browns head coach, went 8-14 in two seasons at the helm for Grambling State football, including a 5-6 record this season. Co-offensive coordinator John Simon will serve as interim head coach.

“We want to thank Coach Jackson on his contributions to the GSU football program. We wish him well in all his future endeavors,” Dr. Trayvean Scott, vice president for intercollegiate athletics at Grambling State, said in a news release. “This was not an easy decision to make but one that we felt was necessary to move our program forward. The goal at GSU is to compete for championships every year. As we move forward, we will be intentional in finding the right person to lead this program back to its rightful place as one of the top programs in the country.”

Jackson, 58, was hired as Grambling State’s head coach in December 2021. Prior to that, he served one season as offensive coordinator under head coach Eddie George at Tennessee State in 2021.

Before returning to the college ranks, Jackson coached the Browns from 2016 to 2018, finishing with a 3-36 record – including an 0-16 record in 2017 – before being relieved of his duties eight games into the 2018 NFL season. He also served as head coach for the Oakland Raiders during the 2011 season, finishing with an 8-8 record. In four season as an NFL head coach, Jackson has an overall record of 11-44-1.
