John McGinn Hibs reunion calls can wait as Jimmy Jeggo focuses on avoiding Swiss miss

McGinn has been on the blower to old pals Lewis Stevenson, Paul hanlon and Marton Boyle but they have a job to do if they want Villa clash.

John McGinn has already been on the phone to his old Hibs team-mates as he looks to come calling on continental duty.

But Jimmy Jeggo insists nobody in Leith can afford to get hung up on the glamour Europa Conference League play-off tie against Aston Villa that could lie in wait next week. Not when Lee Johnson’s players need to dial in to the job that still needs to be done in Switzerland tomorrow.

Jordan Obita’s 90th- minute strike at Easter Road has given them a two-goal cushion heading to the banks of Lake Lucerne. But the Hibees are not here for the sights, stunning as the snow-capped Mount Pilatus that overlooks the expanse of water may be. This is Jeggo’s fifth crack at qualifying for the groups after spells with Sturm Graz, Austria Vienna and Aris Thessaloniki. Not once has the 31-year-old Aussie’s made it beyond this third qualifying round in either the Europa or Conference League.

And while McGinn may be getting ahead of himself on the blower to Lewis Stevenson, Paul Hanlon and Martin Boyle, there’s no way Jeggo and Co will look beyond Luzern. He said: “Between now and the end of my career I want to get to the play-offs and further, I want to experience the group stage. We want to go as far as possible and there’s the carrot of what will be a massive occasion against Villa if we get through.

“For the club it makes a big difference financially and for the supporters it’s a massive occasion. We don’t want it to end this week.

“It would be amazing to play Villa. John McGinn has already been on to a couple of the boys he played with here. I’m not sure what he was saying but the boys were saying there have been a few texts flying about.

“He’s clearly a hero here and it’d be a big enough occasion but that element makes it even more special. I don’t know McGinn but I’ve watched him in clips for Hibs and later on down the track for Villa and Scotland.

“He is a fantastic player and it’s so exciting to get the chance to come up against top professionals. But the worst thing for us would be to get too hung up on that possibility. We’ve put ourselves in such a good position but we know we’re a long way away from going through and need another big performance.”

Jeggo was a second-half sub in the 3-1 first-leg win before his first start of the season in Sunday’s loss at Motherwell. It’s not been the beginning to the season he’d hoped for but he’ll be ready for action after declaring Luzern’s roughhouse tactics in the second 45 in Leith played into Hibs’ hands.

He said: “It didn’t surprise me. Having played in Austria, which is a similar league to Switzerland, those leagues are physical and intense. But it’s something we can match.

“It did us a favour because it got the crowd going and we showed it’s something we can deal with. They’re a very good side. We need to be wary of their strengths and make sure, like in the first leg, we impose ourselves on the game and hurt them going the other way.
