Man dies by suicide after leading officers on chase in Fort Worth, police say
The man police said was a possible suspect of a burglary ran from officers and fired a gun “multiple times” at them, Fort Worth police said.
A man who led officers on a chase and opened fire on them Tuesday evening died by suicide during the pursuit, Fort Worth police said.
Shortly after 9 p.m., officers responded to a burglar alarm call at a business in the 700 block of North Beach Street, just south of State Highway 121, in Fort Worth, according to police.
Responding officers found a “possible suspect” at the location, but the man ran from authorities, heading north on Beach Street, police said, adding that the man fired a gun at officers “multiple times.”
Three officers returned fire, but authorities do not believe the man was struck by officers’ gunfire, police said. No officers or bystanders were injured during the pursuit.
The man died by suicide after falling in an embankment along S.H. 121, police said, adding that officers immediately provided medical aid. The man was later pronounced dead at a hospital, according to police.
The Tarrant County medical examiner’s Office will confirm the man’s identity after next of kin has been notified, police added.
The Fort Worth Police Department’s major case unit and internal affairs unit are investigating the incident, and the Tarrant County district attorney’s office will review the case, police said.
