Insider blasts voters for Damar Hamlin Comeback Player of the Year snub
Flacco remained an unsigned free agent until the Cleveland Browns sought a temporary replacement for injured quarterback Deshaun Watson in November 2023. The 39-year-old suddenly became a Cleveland sports savior, winning four of five regular-season starts and helping the Browns reach the playoffs. However, he and the club were brought back down to earth after a 45-14 wild-card playoff loss to the Houston Texans on Jan. 13.
Meanwhile, the Pro Football Writers of America named Hamlin Comeback Player of the Year in January after he appeared in five regular-season games and two playoff games. The 25-year-old went into cardiac arrest during a “Monday Night Football” game against the Cincinnati Bengals on January 2, 2023, and had to be revived on the field.
Flacco aggressively lobbied for Hamlin to win the AP Comeback Player of the Year Award before the “NFL Honors” program on Thursday. According to the Associated Press website, Flacco garnered 13 first-place votes and 151 overall points in voting. Hamlin finished with 21 first-place votes and 140 total points.
“Eight voters did not have Hamlin in their top three Comeback candidates,” he said. “I simply do not understand.”
