The Atlanta Braves have taken an unexpected decision to leave pitcher Kyle Wright off the roster for the National League Division Series.
According to Mark Bowman of MLB.com:
Daysbel Hernandez impressed during his participation in two intrasquad games this week. He and Tonkin will be on the roster. Kyle Wright and Jesse Chavez will not be
It’s true that Wright has dealt with injury and ineffectiveness this year, but it’s still shocking given the nature of this “stuff” and his early career exploits.
The 28-year-old won 21 games in 2022 and had a 3.19 ERA. He, Spencer Strider, and Max Fried should form a formidable trio of young Braves starters, but Wright will not have the opportunity to make an impression in the series against the Phillies.
This year, he suffered repeated spells on the disabled list and only threw 31.0 innings. He has a 6.97 ERA in just nine games.
Perhaps if the Braves make it to the National League Championship Series, he will be given a chance on the roster when extra starts or depth relievers are needed.
The Braves will open the NLDS on Saturday night at Truist Park. The first pitch is planned for 6:07 p.m. ET, with Strider facing lefty Ranger Suarez.
Strider will almost certainly garner Cy Young votes this year after going 20-5 with a 3.86 ERA. He had the most strikeouts in baseball (281).
Suarez finished 4-6 regular season with a 4.18 ERA, but he is 2-0 in the postseason.
