Patriots Predicted to Sign Former Commanders, Browns Quarterback
The New England Patriots, like the Washington Commanders, will be hunting for a franchise quarterback in the draft. The Patriots control the third pick and will have the opportunity to select one of Jayden Daniels, Caleb Williams, or Drake Maye. There is still a need for a backup quarterback, and a former Commanders and Cleveland Browns quarterback could be an ideal candidate. Jacoby Brissett has built a life as a reliable backup and will find himself on another team to do the same in 2024.
The Patriots could be ideal for him. Brissett could teach their expected number three choice everything he needs to know about the NFL. If the rookie quarterback fails, Brissett may go in and relieve the burden. Dakota Randall of Pro Football Network predicts that the 2023 Commanders backup will join the Patriots this offseason.
“There are some decent alternatives, including Ryan Tannehill, Tyrod Taylor, and Sam Darnold. There’s also Joe Flacco, who, according to insiders, impressed new Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt during their brief stint with the Cleveland Browns in 2023. However, Brissett is the clear choice here, as he checks a lot of boxes for the Patriots.
“He is willing to take on the position of backup. He worked alongside Van Pelt in Cleveland. He has started 48 games, including 15 in two separate seasons. He knows New England because he was drafted by the Patriots in 2016. He is also a dual-threat quarterback, which would give important continuity if the Patriots choose an athletic quarterback first in the draft.”
While the Patriots are a possible destination for the veteran, a reunion with the Commanders or Browns may benefit both parties.
The Chicago Bears control the whole draft, but the Washington Commanders will have a significant impact on what the New England Patriots do with the third choice.
It is predicted that the top three picks in the draft will all be quarterbacks, presenting the Commanders and Patriots with difficult choices. However, the Patriots’ decision will be heavily influenced by what the Commanders do at No. 2.
According to Chad Graff and Jeff Howe of The Athletic, the Patriots plan to choose a quarterback and have a veteran mentor the rookie on what it takes to be an NFL player. That’s where a player like Brissett comes into play.
