Texas football HC Steve Sarkisian explains why leaving for Alabama was never a ‘reality’

The college football coaching carousel was out of control for a few weeks during the offseason. After Nick Saban retired from Alabama, a flurry of names surfaced, including Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian.

Sarkisian ultimately elected to stay in Texas and negotiate a new contract extension. During a recent episode of All Facts No Brakes with Keyshawn Johnson, Sarkisian explained why he never considered moving to Alabama and instead chose to stay in Texas.

“The supposition about the outside world was likely just that. We were in the process of negotiating and finalizing my new contract. I believe we are on the verge of accomplishing something truly extraordinary here in Texas. That was not actually a reality.”

Texas Longhorns' season-long bank heist fell short at the vault

Replacing Nick Saban, unquestionably one of the greatest college coaches in history, is a daunting task for anyone. Sarkisian acknowledges it was never a reality because they were negotiating a new deal for him.

Texas’ football program is on the verge of something remarkable, having recently advanced to the College Football Playoff after defeating Alabama during the regular season. With Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning returning for the 2024 season, the Longhorns could once again be considered a top team in the country as they transition to the SEC.

Leaving the Texas football program for Alabama is undoubtedly an option, but Steve Sarkisian confesses he is content in Austin and excited to continue building something exceptional.
