Leeds interested in Norwich midfielder McLean, would replace outgoing Adams

Leeds United are keen on Norwich City midfielder Kenny McLean as they seek to replace USMNT international Tyler Adams, according to a report from TEAMtalk.

Adams is due to leave Elland Road imminently after agreeing terms with Premier League side Bournemouth – with a medical scheduled for today. The reported transfer fee is in the region of £23m plus add-ons, meaning that the Whites are set to make an approximate £3m profit on the US national team captain who they signed from RB Leipzig for £20m last summer.

The 24-year-old’s departure will come as a blow to those in charge in West Yorkshire, with Leeds’ owners 49ers Enterprises repeatedly going on record to claim that they were hoping to retain his services.

Whilst the Whites do have 17-year-old Archie Gray and summer arrival Ethan Ampadu to occupy the defensive midfield role previously held by Adams, there is no doubt that his move leaves a gap in manager Daniel Farke’s squad that will need to be filled.

The Leeds hierarchy do not appear to be wasting any time in seeking a replacement for Adams however, with TEAMtalk claiming that they are “plotting a swoop” for McLean.

The 31-year-old is a figure who Farke will be familiar with given that he was a key component of the side who saw Norwich win promotion from the Championship as league champions in 2019 and 2021. His experience and knowledge of the English second-tier could very well prove valuable to the Whites, who are seeking an immediate return to the top-flight this season.

It is understood that Leeds will have to put forward a “convincing bid” for McLean’s signature, with Norwich understandably hesitant to sell one of their players to a Championship rival. The Scotsman currently has two years remaining on his contract at Carrow Road.

Leeds continue their current campaign against West Bromwich Albion at Elland Road this evening, with Farke’s side still seeking their first league win this term.
