Leeds United expected to be keen on Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence

Leeds United and Southampton should be expected to want Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence, according to Dean Jones.Tottenham star Spence expected to make full debut 'soon' - expert

The former Eurosport journalist told Give Me Sport on Sunday (20 August) that if Spurs decide to change their stance on the right-back, a deal is there to be done.

The 23-year-old moved to North London last summer but has found game time hard to come by.

Jones said, “Yeah I think in the light of the Max Aarons move not working out it seems like a good idea to explore the situation with Spence.

There’s huge competition at right-back at Spurs, and while there’s been a resistance to letting him out so far, I think that might have to change at the very end of the window.

Both Leeds and Southampton should probably be interested in something like that if it came about.”

Luke Ayling has started the season has the first-choice right-back and Cody Drameh is waiting to take over the reins eventually.

He shone last season on loan at Luton Town and there’s a very good argument to be made on him starting over Ayling.

Bringing in Spence will only push back Drameh’s development and it makes no sense for Leeds to go in for the Spurs man.

Had Drameh or Ayling been leaving, then there is merit in going behind him, but right now, there seems to be no point in signing him.

Thus far, there seems to be no indications from him that he wants out and there are other areas needed to be strengthened first before a right-back must be considered.

A left-bafk, central midfield and striker have to be the priorities and a move for Spence does not seem to be on the cards.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites need to table a ‘Convincing’ bid to sign a striker as EFL rivals’ stance emerges on his sale this summer.

At the weekend, Calcio Atalanta stated Leeds United’s Wilfried Gnonto is being evaluated by Atalanta following El Bilal Touré’s serious injury setback.

The forward is ‘determined not to play’ in the Championship and is keen to leave Daniel Farke’s side before the window closes.

That’s according to Tutto Atalanta, who look at the possibility of the Leeds player joining the Serie A side.

It’s claimed Gian Piero Gasperini’s side have ‘examined the hypotheses’ of signing the 19-year-old but he’s not a priority target for them.

Everton and AS Roma are also in the picture to sign him. The report states Sean Dyche’s side have ‘appeared to be in pole position’ while the Giallorossi have recently joined the transfer race. The latter are looking to take the player on a loan deal.

The Italy international seems to be keen to play in the Premier League or Serie A, in order to improve his chances of representing his country at Euro 2024.

After Roma decided to join the battle with Everton, the Leeds attacker has an ‘important decision ahead of him’.

Tutto Atalanta say the situation around Gnonto is ‘developing rapidly’ and a decision on his future could be made in the ‘coming days’.
