Welsh rugby union player, a star of Wales and Lions, has been forced to retire from rugby due to an injury.

Former Wales rugby captain Ken Owens has announced his retirement from the sport due to a back problem. Owens, who played five Tests for the British and Irish Lions, has been sidelined for almost a year. He won two grand slams and two Six Nations titles during his 91 caps for Wales.

The speaker expresses gratitude for their incredible career, despite the challenges they faced as a child, and acknowledges the privilege they have had in their career, despite the possibility of more success.

Owens, a professional rugby player, made his debut for the Scarlets in 2006 and made 274 appearances. He won his first cap in 2011 but was denied a fourth World Cup due to a back injury.

His last match was the Scarlets’ Challenge Cup defeat by Glasgow in April 2023.

WRU chief executive Abi Tierney praised Ken Owens for his exceptional career as a player, role model, and talismanic leader. Owens has captained senior sides in succession, demonstrating his leadership skills and will be missed on the pitch and in changing rooms.
