The media almost constantly links Newcastle United’s top players with moves away from St James’ Park, and while we know there’s only a slim chance of them being true, they still gain traction, but every now and then they come up with a story that’s so insane it shouldn’t be brought to your attention, but it would be insane not to discuss it.

Today, The Star published one such report, claiming that Newcastle United’s Player of the Year, Anthony Gordon, will join Liverpool this summer.

The former Everton player, who only yesterday spoke of his enormous satisfaction playing for Newcastle, is now a target for Liverpool.

FFP serves as an excuse to make the plot work.
The Star believes that Financial Fair Play would force Newcastle to sell one of their star players, a claim that Eddie Howe has often denied.

To demonstrate how far off base we believe this is, The Star reports that Newcastle signed Anthony Gordon from Everton for £45 million in August last year, when it was actually January.

We understand how simple it is to make minor mistakes when writing a tale, but we also understand how much those mistakes may erode your credibility. It’s not that bad for us who provide our two cents on stories that someone else has.

It certainly made us laugh today.
After Gordon’s season with Newcastle, there is no way the club would consider letting him go, and Gordon’s own statements yesterday make it sound like he has no plans to leave either.

While there is speculation that Gordon grew up supporting Liverpool, the fact that his professional football career began at Everton would make it difficult for him to be accepted by Reds fans, and it would undoubtedly drive an even deeper wedge between Gordon and Everton fans who have yet to recover from his departure from The Toffees.

Who doesn’t enjoy a bit of nonsense on a Sunday afternoon?
