Panthers sign former Seahawks rushing leader.
The Carolina Panthers recently hired Dave Canales, a former Seattle Seahawks coach, and now they’re adding a former Seahawks running leader.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on Monday that veteran running back Rashaad Penny intends to join with the Panthers. According to Fowler, the signing will most likely occur following rookie minicamp.
Penny, 28, an ex-first-round draft pick, played for Seattle from 2018 to 2022 and led the team in rushing with 749 yards and six touchdowns in 2021. Canales, who was named Carolina’s new head coach in January, previously served as the Seahawks’ offensive coach.
Penny played last season with the Philadelphia Eagles, but he only made three appearances in a crowded backfield. He also has a troubling history of ailments, including a ruptured ACL in 2019 and a broken fibula in 2022. Still, the Panthers need a little more excitement than last season’s RB combo of Chuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders, so they’re taking a chance on Penny to round out their offseason skill-player roster.
