Lewis Hamilton announces Ferrari move, drops biggest Grand Prix fit yet.

Lewis Hamilton has long admired Rick Owens. Since being photographed at the eponymous label’s Paris Fashion Week show in 2017, his outfit hasn’t been the same. At the F1 Grand Prix of Emilia-Romagna over the weekend, he swore his devotion to fashion’s eternal dark lord once more, with what may be his largest fit… ever.

Usually, the British racing driver likes to wear Rick Owens pieces that haven’t even released to the public yet. Because when you’re the brand’s biggest fan, you get first dibs. Last year, for example, the luxury label designed a disco-ready boiler suit just for him, and a couple of months ago, the Billion Dollar Man elected for a cosy fleece jacket that had only just been revealed on the runway a few weeks prior.

But, as tempting as it might be, Hamilton’s not just about flexing the latest stuff. In Italy yesterday, his deconstructed coat was swiped straight out of Rick Owens’ Spring/Summer 2022 collection. It was a supersized blazer with the arms and sides all scooped out. He wore it with the matching deep V-neck shirt (emphasis on “deep”), and gigantic trousers that, if it weren’t for his ultra chunky Veneda Carter Timberlands, would’ve trailed on the ground.

“Everyone in general has started to be more and more open-minded and now no one comments on what I wear,” says Hamilton to GQ in a 2023 interview. “It’s just like, ‘that’s what Lewis does’. But at the beginning, jeez, people definitely criticised. [Formula One] was an environment where you couldn’t really be yourself. Now you’re starting to see people really blossom, which is really cool.”

With Sir Lewis Hamilton set to join Ferrari next year, a lot’s about to change. But one thing remains, and that’s his love for Rick Owens.
