Wrexham waved goodbye to captain Luke Young after six years and the 31-year-old has just dropped a hint over his next club.
Luke Young captained Wrexham to a history-making back-to-back promotions, taking the Reds from the National League to League One.
The 31-year-old made 259 appearances for the Welsh side across his six-year stay but sadly, after helping Phil Parkinson’s men achieve a second-place finish, he was told to leave on a free transfer.
Parkinson felt it was the correct decision to let Young spread his wings elsewhere, as while he’s been a great servant, he wanted his former captain to play regular football, something that wasn’t guaranteed at the Racecourse.
Young is now waiting on offers from other clubs and Parkinson has claimed that rival managers have made a couple of calls regarding each player let go, including Ben Tozer and Jordan Tunnicliffe.
Luke Young drops a big hint about his next club
Young has described joining Wrexham as the ‘best’ decision he made in his career and it is hard to argue against that claim.
Not only has he captained the club to two promotions, but he’s also settled in the area with a wife and kids.
This could point towards Young signing for a club in the area as the former Plymouth Argyle midfielder doesn’t want to leave a place where he’s settled.
Speaking to The Leader, Young said: “Looking back now, it was the best thing that happened for my career footballing-wise. I have left Wrexham but we are still going to be around the area.
“Chloe and the kids are most certainly going to be sticking where we are in Oswestry. The kids are settled in school, Chloe has got good friends and good people around her, and she is settled as well.
“It comes to a time in life where you have got to have that settlement in your family life and we have certainly found that up here.
Which club could Luke Young join?
Young has already hinted at him wanting to stay in the area and ultimately, that limits the chances of him signing for a club miles away from his current location.
One of the closest clubs to Wrexham in League Two were Tranmere Rovers, a side that finished 16th in the table and recorded a 1-0 victory over the Reds in March.
Likewise, Crewe Alexandra – a side that lost in the play-off final against Crawley Town – is another possibility for Young, especially after they failed to win promotion.
Wrexham is only 26 miles away from Crewe, so if he was willing to commute for training and matchday, perhaps they’re a possibility.
Ultimately, it all depends on which clubs show an interest in the midfielder. He’s certainly good enough to continue playing in League Two, so it will be interesting to see which club snaps him up.
