“A good Championship player” – Sheffield Wednesday urged to move on Brentford player decision

Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly interested in defender Charlie Goode following his release by Brentford.
Pundit Carlton Palmer believes former Brentford defender Charlie Goode would be an excellent signing for Sheffield Wednesday.
According to The Star, the Owls are weighing up a move for Goode, who has been released by Brentford at the end of his contract.
Goode joined the Bees from Northampton Town in August 2020, but he struggled to nail down a place in the team, and he made just 20 appearances in four years at the club, spending time out on loan with Sheffield United, Blackpool and Wigan Athletic.
The 28-year-old spent the second half of this season on loan with Wigan in League One, making 13 appearances for the Latics before his spell at the DW Stadium came to an end in April due to personal reasons.
Wednesday could be in need of reinforcements at centre-back this summer with Liam Palmer, Di’Shon Bernard and Dominic Iorfa all out of contract, and while the trio have all been offered new deals, they are yet to commit their future to the club.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Palmer said that Wednesday should pursue a deal for Goode this summer, but believes the Owls will face plenty of competition for his signature.
“There is uncertainty over two of Sheffield Wednesday’s centre-backs, Di’Shon Bernard and Dominic Iorfa, as both are yet to sign new contracts with the football club,” Palmer said.
“It is believed that Sheffield Wednesday are weighing up a move for 28-year-old Charlie Goode, who is going to be out of contract at Brentford come the end of the season.
“Goode signed for Brentford from Northampton, and he won promotion from the Championship to the Premier League in his first season with the football club.
“But since then, he’s found game time hard to come by under Thomas Frank, making just 20 appearances in all competitions for the club in total.
“Much of his career at Brentford has been spent out on loan elsewhere, Sheffield United, Blackpool and Wigan to name a few of the clubs he’s been out on loan to.
“He brings a wealth of experience, he’s obviously a good Championship player, he falls short of the standard that Thomas Frank needs for the Premier League, but you’ve got to get to the Premier League first.
“So he would be a solid signing for them, I don’t think they’ll be any shortage of offers for Goode, so this would be some coup if Sheffield Wednesday were able to pull off the signing.”
Palmer is right that Goode could prove to be a shrewd signing for Wednesday, but his lack of first-team football in recent years will be a concern for the Owls.
Goode has made just 38 senior appearances in the last four years since his move to Brentford, and his loan spells at Sheffield United and Blackpool were both cut short by injury.
There is no doubt that Goode would be a capable performer at Championship level, and if he can rediscover the form that convinced the Bees to sign him from Northampton in 2020, he could be an excellent addition for Wednesday.
The Owls must carefully consider whether there are better options than Goode out there, but he could be a useful option to have in the squad, particularly if Palmer, Iorfa or Bernard were to decide against signing a new contract.
