Tottenham extend defender’s contract for another season despite expected transfer exit

Tottenham Hotspur have taken up the option to extend the contract of Joe Rodon despite his future expected to lie elsewhere, football.london understands.

This week the club announced that Ryan Sessegnon and Japhet Tanganga had both been released from their contracts after the options to extend their deals by another 12 months were allowed to lapse by the club and the two defenders will now be looking for new clubs.

However, in the case of another Spurs centre-back in Rodon, it was decided to exercise the option within his contract to extend his deal to the full five years possible with the player understood to have been informed last month. The Welshman enjoyed a fruitful season away from the club this term and there is expected to be plenty of interest in his services this summer.

With the extra 12 months that will ensure Tottenham get a fee for the player if he departs as expected, as he is not part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans for next season. The Australian admitted towards the end of the season that he was looking to sign another centre-back to compete with Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin.
