Toronto Blue Jays’ Widely Rumored Trade Candidate Lands on Injured List

The Toronto Blue Jays placed shortstop Bo Bichette on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, throwing a wrinkle into the fate of a potential trade deadline candidate if the Blue Jays decide to sell.

Bichette, 26, has a strained right calf that will sideline him for at least the next 10 days. Toronto announced it has recalled infielder Orelvis Martinez from Triple-A, and that he will be active for its Tuesday night game against the Boston Red Sox.

At 35-37, the Blue Jays are 14 games behind the New York Yankees for first place in the American League East, and five games behind the Minnesota Twins for the third and final AL wild-card berth.

With 37 games to play until the trade deadline, it’s understandable that the Blue Jays would be reluctant to trade players from their vaunted core. Although they recently dealt utility infielder Cavan Biggio to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a minor league pitcher, general manager Ross Atkins went on record this month as saying a trade involving Bichette or star infielder Vladimir Guerrero Jr. “wouldn’t make any sense.
