Vegas high school sophomore, 16, collapses and dies while playing flag football game three days after Bills star Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest on field

A high school student-athlete died Thursday after suffering a medical emergency and collapsing during a varsity flag football game at her school just three days after a Buffalo Bills player suffered a cardiac arrest during a game.

The Clark County coroner identified the girl as Ashari Hughes, 16, and reported that a determination of her cause and manner of death was pending.

Desert Oasis High School Principal Ian Salzman said in an email that campus staff members immediately provided medical aid after Hughes collapsed, until paramedics arrived during the school’s home game against Valley High School, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

Ashari’s parents, En Enttroda and Twayne Hughes, said their daughter ‘loved music, dancing, and being around all the people she loved. She called football the real love of her life!”
