Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge believes Rory Lobb’s place on the squad is secure following his defensive heroics in an overwhelming victory over Geelong.

Beveridge described the Bulldogs’ second consecutive win over a top four team as a “pretty special night” and complimented Lobb with “raising the bar” for his team’s defensive approach.

In only his fourth game as a defender, the 31-year-old recorded a career-high 21 disposals and nine marks, limiting Jeremy Cameron to one goal at GMHBA Stadium.

“(Lobb) appears to be a natural defender.” It’s been so difficult at times when he hasn’t been on the team, because, as I’ve said, he’s too good a player, too good a professional, and he’s

“It doesn’t always matter for much when it comes to selection, but I’m really thrilled that what he’s doing means his status in the team – if he’s fit – should not be called into question.

“We’ve found a way forward with him, and I love the fact that he’s got peace of mind, not just in his footy and in his professional life, but just in general.”

Beveridge also lauded Buku Khamis, Taylor Duryea, and first-year Bulldog Nick Coffield for their impressive efforts in a backline that is still waiting for Liam Jones to return from a knee injury.

“(Lobb) and Buku were simply impenetrable.” It was a telling key-back performance. “(Lobb) was quite magnificent,” he said.

“Rory has made a difference; it’s improved, and he’s upped the bar slightly, which is encouraging.

“I think we had some amazing performances, but everyone was incredibly involved and essential in the win, which is something that always motivates me and our coaches.

“You walk away, and everyone’s driving back down the highway feeling like they had a major contribution to a pretty special night.”

Beveridge said Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (four goals) was prospering in a slightly altered role that included more time up the field, and that he worked well with Aaron Naughton and Sam Darcy despite the trio’s lack of football together since Naughton’s knee injury two months ago.

“We probably spun those guys a bit more than we usually do because of the conditions and the pressure game we were after,” Beveridge remarked about the trio.

“I believe they’ll be better next week, Jamarra…” His desire to tackle is evident, which really benefits us. It was fantastic to see him gain some credit in the fourth quarter by hitting the scoreboard.

“Apart from the Port Adelaide game, we’ve been really steady. I believe some individuals experienced growth tonight. That’s not always linear; next week will be another challenge, but there’s no doubt that some of the boys who haven’t necessarily won their positions emphatically along the way are growing confidence in their ability to compete with the best.”
