Norwich City boss David Wagner has confirmed that Kenny McLean will not be joining Leeds United this summer, ending any speculation of Daniel Farke and him reuniting at Elland Road.

The Whites saw a £4million bid rejected by the Canaries [Sky Sports, 29 August] for the Scotland international with the midfielder seen as a potential candidate to help fill the void in midfield after Tyler Adams’ departure.

Having played every minute for Wagner’s side in the Championship so far this season, McLean was left out of Norwich’s side for their Carabao Cup win over Bristol City on Tuesday (29 August), but the manager was quick to shut down any speculation around his futureSpeaking following the win to the PinkUn YouTube channel (29 August), he said: “When I can deny anything, then it is Kenny McLean will not go to Leeds. We rested them, especially Kenny and Gunny (Angus Gunn), next week they are away with Scotland.”

Wagner also reinforced that neither his nor Norwich’s stance would change regarding McLean’s availability to the Whites this summer.

Leeds are looking to be busy between now and the end of the transfer window, adding the finishing touches to their squad as they hope to finally settle ahead of the 1 September deadline after what has been a tumultuous summer of ins and outs.

While McLean would have been an excellent addition to the squad at Elland Road and is known well by Farke after the pair worked together at Carrow Road, missing out on the 31-year-old won’t be the biggest loss, assuming they can bring in another new midfielder.

Norwich have their own aspirations of returning to the Premier League this season and have started the season impressively, remaining unbeaten so far this campaign, so they were always unlikely to allow one of their key players to depart to a relegation rival.

The Whites do look light in the middle of the park, with an early reliance on 17-year-old Archie Gray to perform due to the lack of options, but with various reports linking United to several different midfielders, Farke and those above him are working hard to find a new option.
