West Ham United youngster Krisztian Hegyi shows he has the hunger to be London Stadium success
Krisztian Hegyi may not be all that well known to West Ham supporters, but that could change over the next year or so.
The 20-year-old has been on the Hammers’ books since 2019 and has yet to make a first-team appearance.
That is not all that surprising given he has Lukasz Fabianski and new number one Alphonse Areola in front of him.
But the youngster is now making waves on loan at Stevenage, where he is getting his first taste of senior football.
Hegyi made a superb late save to deny Watford a late winner in last month’s EFL Cup first-round tie, before saving a spot-kick as Stevenage prevailed on pens.
If Hegyi can go on to establish himself as a regular for Stevenage at League One level, then he will be in a far better position to challenge for a place in West Ham’s squad next season.
In fact, the youngster acknowledged as much in an interview in his homeland this week.
Speaking to Hungarian outlet M4 Sport [5 September] while away on U21 duty, Hegyi said he “fights every day” to earn a place among West Ham’s subs, with the aim of eventually usurping both Fabianski and Areola – or whoever else may be in hold of the gloves at that point.
Hegyi also said he “will die for the Hungarian badge” while representing his country, so he certainly does not lack the fighting spirit needed to achieve what looks like a very big task at this stage in becoming West Ham’s long-term number one.
It may be a couple of years off yet, but do not be surprised if Hegyi becomes a household name at the London Stadium in the future.
